Severe Acne: Understanding Acne Cysts

by Susan Lane

There are two types of categories for acne, severe and mild. Some examples of mild acne are pustules, whiteheads and blackheads. Although in this article we are going to focus on one of the sever types of acne, cystic acne.

Cystic acne is the worst form of acne that a person can experience. Its consequences are more serious than other types of acne. This is caused by an infection in the inner layers of the dermis that stimulates the formation of nodules. Another denomination for this type of acne is acne vulgaris. The factor that contributes to the formation of acne cysts and acne nodules is clogged pores that don't allow the normal flow of the sebum to the skin surface. The inflammation of the area is a defense mechanism developed by the body to attack infections. An acne cyst is the consequence of an extreme reaction of the body towards a severe infection.

This type of reaction causes the body to release sebum. Excess amounts of this turn into a rich feeding ground for bacteria that lives inside the skin follicles or on the surface of the skin. The condition produced by the overflow of sebum can lead to the formation of pimples as large as five millimeters.

Understanding Cystic Acne

Retention keratosis is a condition that can worsen facial cysts. Retention is caused when dead skin cells are not properly released into the skin surface. Improper disposal of cells leads to the clogging of these follicles. If not treated, the infection can amplify in size and area which causes acne cysts to become more serious.

Another factor that may contribute to nodulocystic acne is hormones. The rise of the sebum outflow can be influenced by hormones such as testosterone and androgen. It is necessary that the sebum ducts be clear in order to prevent them from getting clogged and decreasing the risk of the cysts formation. Other factors such as genetic background and lifestyle of a person can determine the severity of the acne. Even stress can enhance acne problems.

Acne cysts take a lot of time to heal since the infection is deep seated however there are acne treatments for cysts. Accutane is medication that many doctors recommend for severe cases. It is designed to decrease the oil glands therefore slowing down oil production. Although this medication has a high rate of success, there are also dangerous risks such as depression. It is recommended that this drug only be taken if all other methods have failed.

Another treatment available is a cortisone injection which can be administered by a dermatologist. The injections provide instant relief of the area affected, reducing its redness and inflammation. After the injection is administrated the pimple is lowered to the skin level making it less noticeable. Some of the problems that may occur after receiving the injection are temporary skin discoloration and bleeding.

It may be difficult to cure cystic acne however it is not a lost cause. Cystic acne can be quite sensitive so it is wise to choose an acne skin care method that will not irritate or harm the skin. Nowadays the market offers several natural options to treat cystic acne.
