All about Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is a skin related disease characterised by cancer, or also known as malignant, cells that are situated in the outer layers of the skin (the epidermis). Your skin is the largest organ of the body and protects your body from heat, light, infection and injury. Skincare is therefore the malignant growth on the skin, therefore making most skin cancers visible to the eye. The cancer cells appear on the skin in many different ways; the most common visible hint is the changing of the skin such as growths, sores that don't heal, small lumps and strange looking darker colourings. The most common zones on the body where these changes can be noted are the face, neck area and shoulders, upper back, arms, hands and other areas that are exposed to the suns dangerous UV rays. The marks that are visible on the skin may appear with smooth, shiny and waxy looking characteristics, also as brown, reddish or dark brown blemishes, some even flat and become scaly and rough with time.

•  Basal Cell Carcinoma is characterised by the smooth yet raised, shiny bump that most commonly appears on the head, neck and shoulders (the regions that are most exposed to the sun). These little bumps can change into little sores that don't heal, and can often be mistaken for this reason. Scabs and bleeding are also present in these small tumors.

•  Squamous cell Carcinoma is slightly different in feature; they are mostly darker red, scaly and rather thickened compared to the rest of the skin. Ulceration and bleeding often occur as well.

•  Malignant Melanomas are commonly recognised as being dark brown, sometimes even black. When moles, freckles or other skin blemishes begin to change color, size and shape it is most likely sign of malignant melanomas. This is the most dangerous and can be fatal iof not successfully treated.

Skin cancer, skin tumours and skin damage is caused by an intense over exposure to the suns harmful UVA and UVB rays. Other causes are related to hereditary reasons and it has been proven that the environment (elevation, cloud cover, latitude and proximity to the ozone layer) in which one lives can cause and effect skin conditions, although the main initiating factor is due to the amount of sun absorbed by the skin and the time of overexposure and accumulated sun burns. Imagine this…! By the time we reach our eighteenth birthday we will have already received 80% of the exposure to the sun in our entire lifetimes. So the problem is not as we get older but rather it starts with the care and protection of the skin from the solar rays as we are growing up.

Prevention and treatment

Skin cancer prevention starts by taking the first steps of consciously making an effort to keep the skin protected from the suns UV rays. The fist step is to cover up, starting with a high factor sun protection cream that should be applied regularly to the skin and exposed areas. Cover up with clothing that isn't loosely knitted and use hats and sunglasses to protect the eyes. Try to avoid the sun as much as possible when its at its strongest; being between 10 am and 3 pm. Try to find out as much as you can about your family medical history to learn about any past cases and of course hereditary possibilities.

The next step is to find out if any existing moles, freckles, sun marks and strange discolorations or any other suspicious marks on the skin that have suddenly appeared are at all risky leading to skin cancer or that are already cancerous. A process known as a biopsy is what will determine if the skin cells that are damage are melanoma cells … cancerous cells or skin cancer.

Once they state pf the cells has been determined the next step is to determine what type and extent of the condition, location and the aggressive ness of the cancerous cells and also the general health of the patient to determine the correct process of treating the cancer in the cases where treatment is possible.

The main challenge when treating skin cancer is to rid the body of the cancerous cells, then reduce the chance if the cancer cells from reforming and building up once again. It is also important that during and after tre atment it is necessary that the healthy skin tissue is preserved so that the healing process can begin successfully, and of course to minimize scarring after surgery.

How is skin cancer treated?

Most medical practitioners and surgeons that deal with the treating of cancer on a daily basis depend upon the latest in technology and discovery of new and powerful medication as well as using the more traditional therapies.

The most popular and most successful treatment is surgery: the tumour is cut and removed from the area of the skin and the wound is then sutured (stitched up) and healing takes place. This treatment is also known as immunotherapy.
