How harmful is the sun?

The suns UVB (Ultra violet B) rays affect the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) and is more commonly known as what we experience as a being a surface sun burn. The UVB rays are at their most powerful during 10 am and 2 pm and obviously more so during the summer months, they cannot penetrate glass. The eyes and the body parts that are exposed on a more frequent basis are the areas that are damaged by these harmful rays.

UVA rays were once said to have less affect on the skins surface, however all the latest studies show that the UVA rays are actually a major factor that causes skin damage. UVA are the rays that penetrate deeply into the skin and works very intensely, since the rays are far more exaggerated. UVA has a constant intensity throughout the year during the cold months and all times of the day. UVA is not filtered by glass.

Both UVA and UVB rays cause serious damage to the skin. Sun damage refers to how the suns rays changes the state and the physical appearance of the skin. The radiation produces those unwanted lines and premature wrinkles; it lowers the skins immune system and makes the body prone to infection. Most skin problems, blemishes, diseases and cancer are caused by these harmful rays from the sun, even though it is not fully understood exactly why and what happens in the skin cells. What has been discovered and proven though, is that the collagen in the skin cells in the skin, the formation of free radicals, slowing down of the reparation of DNA and the lowering. UV rays have also been proven to damage the eyes, especially the cornea.

What exactly happens?

Free radicals are the result of UV radiation; the free radicals are the unstable oxygen molecules that have only one electron instead of two. Electrons are found in pairs and when one is lost to the other molecules, the molecule has to find a new electron and the process is once again repeated. This is the exact process that causes the damage to the skin cells leaving the skin wrinkled, loose and insufficient normal cell functioning.

The wrinkles are the result of the collagen breakdown in the dermis. Sunlight destructs collagens fibres in the skin which provokes the build up of abnormal elastin and the metalloproteinases enzymes are accumulated in abundance. When the normal metalloproteinases enzymes are in charge of the remodeling of the sun damaged skin they remake the lost collagen. When the process is not accurately carried out these enzymes break the collagen down. The result is the arrangement of disordered collagen fibres that are formerly known as solar scars. As time goes by and these solar scars are repeatedly damaged by the sun and as long as this imperfect process is persistent then wrinkles will be formed (worsening as time goes by)

Not only are wrinkles and solar scars a result of UV damage from the suns rays but also has destructive consequences on the body's defense system (immune system). The defense system; made up of white blood cells and specialized skin cells is vitally important as it attacks the cancer cells in the body. When these cells are constantly exposed to the suns rays and are regularly damaged, certain chemicals are released and the immune system cannot function properly to protect the body.

When the immune system has acted out all its primary activities it come to a point where the process called Apoptosis occurs. It is also known as cell-suicide whereby the severely damaged cells are killed off so that they cannot become cancerous cells. This operation is seen by us as the skin that peels off after a serious sun burn. Permanent and consistent UV exposure prevents the cells form dieing off and they continue to divide and in most cases become cancerous cells.

When is the skin exposed to the sun?

We are exposed to the suns UV rays without even realising it and when we least expect it: driving in the car, sitting near a window, walking in the neighbourhood, walking form the supermarket to the car. These are simply daily tasks but they involve what is known as secondary UV exposure. It even occurs when we are in the shade, on cloudy overcast days and even while we are indoors. It has been investigated and stated that we are exposed to UV rays for at least 10 hours of secondary exposure every week. While during the same period of one week we are exposed to at least a minimum of 7 hours of direct UV rays without the required protective shields, so basically we are looking at an average of 20 hours of sun exposure on a weekly basis…the equivalent of an entire weekend on the beach in the boiling sun with absolutely no protection whatsoever. CRAZY isn't it?
